Hard 10 days! I wish I could bottle some energy

I was so pumped hitting the half way point, thinking way too far ahead of the finish line!  The day after hitting the half way point, went and spent the day in the sun enjoying the Rodeo and got up on Monday ready for a good day in the saddle.   I went 4kms, and my limbs went to jello and I was nervous I wouldn't make it home, the heat hit me hard and quick.   So I got home with 8kms done and sat and did nothing the rest of day.   Ok, I thought  I'll use my head, and get up at 7am and get my cycle in before the heat hits!  Slept on the couch, Wes in the basement due to the heat and I got up early,  which I HATE,  not a morning person, jumped on the bike and got a beautiful ride in.  I was surprised how many other smart people were on the trails getting their run, walk, etc. in before the heat set in for the day.   My bike was acting up with shifting gears but other than that it was perfect ride.   So thinking I had this handled I did the same thing the next day, there are some days when I'm doing this I really have to play mind games, I can hear some remarks to this already!   Anyways I got about 20 kms in and decided I wanted to try and extend the ride home as long as I could so I decided not to look at the odometer on my bike till I got home.... Away I went pedaling down some side streets to add miles on, and just trying to enjoy the new scenery, oh such a smart girl, a real biker chick, up early cycling my butt off and smiling how easy sometimes it is to trick my brain.    I get home figuring I at least added 15kms on, and look down and the number was the same, the wiring came apart, ask me if I was smiling.    I figure this will really bother me is when I'm at the 1485 mark.

Took my bike in to Bike Bros, and they are going to try and search out some parts that will be better and make my shifting easier.  My townie is an awesome bike comfort wise, but it really isn't designed to do what I'm doing with it.. I am lucky to have such a great bike shop in town, thumbs up to them.

Didn't get any miles in on the weekend, Wes and I took the weekend off and went to Jasper for a much needed break and to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary.   We got some hikes in and between the MS and my ankle, I realized  I love my cycling for the freedom it gives me, Wes used the word mobility.  I had a do nothing day Monday resting up from the weekend.   A little off topic, but we saw tons of wildlife on our trip, black bear, caribou, elk, deer, moose, mountain goats, bald eagle, coyote and of course some chipmunks.  (millions of mosquitoes as well!)

Got a cycle in on Tuesday, was taking a break and reading a sign in a parking lot when a free dog came up growling and raising his hair at me, I picked up my bike and put it in between us, the owner came with saying  the dog doesn't like bikes!   Why then is it free?  This is the only danger I really have, 3 times in two years this has happend to me.  I think the bears are safer!

Went again today, and the heat got me again, so I stopped and played around in the creek for awhile and got myself cooled off... note to self don't cycle in a white tee shirt....
Really hoping it's the heat and not my body showing fatigue for taking this journey on!
   I'm officially at 865 km.

Off to buy a small spray bottle and to make some more neck cooling ties.....

In my dreamworld, I just arrived in Foam Lake Saskatchewan.  Darn I missed the 8th annual  Tuffnell Fiddle and Guitar camp by a week.  They have a lovely outdoor pool so maybe I'll just spend the day cooling off    I am about 100 kms. away from Yorkton, oh that place as memories.   Spent my high school years 40kms. south of there in Melville.   Put the coffee pot on Ger and Cheri!  (Brother and sister in law)

Stay cool, and enjoy your day the best you can!

Half Way !!!!!!

July 7,2012

My goal was to reach the half way point by my birthday, so I guess I made it... I'm not 53 till a week today.

Wes and I went into Calgary last weekend to do a long cycle ride, we decided to try out the new path system that follows Stony Trail,  called the green way.   It wasn't as long as we thought, as it's not completed yet but it will be great when it's done, just hoping they put some toilets in.   No bushes, and it follows the highway so there was no sneaking into the ditch for me..  Did find an A&W off the trail, and ducked in for some much needed relief.  Exciting news is we saw a couple of bears on the trail, and we got a picture of them.

Enough Said!

We didn't get the kilometers in that I wanted to get done, as my goal was 50 that day, so we
went for lunch and than we did a 20 kilometer run for a Starbucks Latte...., oh and it was so worth it!  Best darn latte I had in a long time... I did get my 50 kms in that day, but I had to go up and down in front of a seniors home to get the last one in, I hope the lady sitting out front didn't think she was losing it, or seeing double.  When I came home I was exhausted and my recovery time was till the next day, thank goodness Wes is Wes and after an hour or so of relaxing made me a lovely dinner.  Life is good.

I got asked a week or so ago why I don't cycle more roads, and the main reason is because I have wobbly days where I weave a bit and certainly don't want to weave into traffic.  I do feel comfortable on residential streets, I guess I feel they are going slower and I won't die if I run into a vehicle.  I do love the trails though I find I feed off the energy of those using them and the activity in the playgrounds.  This week the kids are still not bored from no school and are laughing and enjoying the lazy days of summer.   I especially like to watch the youth at the skateboard park, there is some amazing talent there... This week, the special moment was having to slowly cross one of the bridges that goes over the creek that wanders through Cochrane, where two little girls where playing Poo stick races.   Wes and I spent many hours in the same spot doing that with Scott.  Ask me if I was smiling.

I made the half way point on July 5th, I was hoping sooner, but my chain broke for no reason, so I took two days off and refueled my energy.   I believe things happen for a reason, and I'm sure I needed the rest.

Today, we put our panniers on our bikes, picked up a friend and  did a little run along the river and than headed to the farmers market to pick up some vegs and fruit.  Wes and I have been riding our bikes to the farmers market on Saturday for a couple of years.   It's a great way to start our weekend off.

I am excited to be at the half way, and am hoping to get done sooner than I originally thought, it is taking over my life.  One of the things I realize about myself through this is I need balance in my life, and I am missing gardening, quilting, golf and just wasting a day doing nothing.  I have no regrets in doing this journey and I find it amazing that 12 years ago I thought I would never cycle or walk a far distance again.   Once again I have to say Life is Good.  I'm officially at 772.9 kms.

In my dream world I have left lovely Saskatoon, and I just missed the horrible storm they had!  I  love looking at the living skies, and the wheat fields as I cycle on FLAT pavement.   The memories of laying down and watching clouds fill my mind.    I have just left Lanigan and am on my way to Dafoe.   Wes used to go to the show in Lanigan as a youngster and has fond memories of the place.  For me it was a place we stopped for a snack and bathroom break on way back to Saskatoon from Melville at a gas station that used to be run by Uncle Stan.

Thanks again for all the support.
